Evelyn Routt, secretary

Evelyn Routt, 98, who did secretarial work in the 1930s for the D.C. Insurance Department, died of respiratory failure Jan. 11 at a nursing home in Nags Head, N.C.

Mrs. Routt moved to Manteo, N.C., from Silver Spring about 10 years ago.

Evelyn Wylie, a native Washingtonian, was a 1928 graduate of the old Business High School and a 1929 graduate of Strayer Business College.

Her first marriage, to James R. Burke Sr., ended in divorce. She was then married for 52 years to Randolph J. Routt, a photographer for the old Washington Star, until his death in 1993.

Survivors include a son from her first marriage, James R. Burke Jr. of Cary N.C.; a daughter from her second marriage, Marjorie R. Perez of Manteo; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
