E.J. Dionne’s April 1 op-ed column, “Hope’s opening day,” focused on the intersection of sports and religion. As a baseball fanatic myself (a long- suffering but faithful New York Mets fan since my first games at age 4 in 1968), I can testify. Religiously, I’m agnostic. The only reason I am not 100 percent atheist? The 1969 Mets. You simply cannot explain them without some belief in an otherworldly power.
