A little young to be a father

Regarding the Feb. 18 Health & Science article “Ancient DNA linked to Native Americans”:

Researchers recovered DNA from the remains of a 12- to 18-month old baby boy buried 12,600 years ago. “[R]esearchers assume . . . some Native Americans were direct descendants of the boy and others were closely related.” Closely related, perhaps. But direct descendants? Of someone who died at 18 months?
