Tax cuts and spending cuts pushed by some exemplary GOP politicians such as Sam Brownback of Kansas and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana are, according to E.J. Dionne Jr. [“A Republican makeover?” op-ed, Feb. 7], “deeply anti-majoritarian and antipopulist.” Gee, I hope so.
Our republic was founded on the idea of protecting individuals against the tyrannies of unrestrained majorities. Piously pronouncing something to be “democratic” or “populist” does not necessarily confer virtue. Indeed, it may be just the opposite.
