The firing of William Proenza [“Top official for Weather Service fired,” news story, Feb. 2] appears to be a blatant attempt to silence a whistleblower. It is true that Mr. Proenza has often been the raspberry seed in the wisdom tooth of many a leader of the National Weather Service and its parent organization, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Nevertheless, no one in the current leadership of the Weather Service understands the service aspects of its mission better than Mr. Proenza does, and there is no one in the NOAA leadership who comes close.
Mr. Proenza is correct to state that the Weather Service has been underfunded for years, and he is being punished for saying so publicly. He will be missed.
