One of Joanna Brooks’s “5 Myths about Mormonism” [Outlook, Aug. 7] was that “Mormon women are second-class citizens.” Her second paragraph supposedly debunking this “myth” included the following: that mainstream Mormonism considers women unequal to men, that women hold a grand total of zero positions in the church’s worldwide command structure and are forbidden from the lay priesthood held by all men 12 and older, and that church ceremonies include unequal gender language while church doctrine holds that men “preside” over their families. Sounds like her commentary should have been titled, “4 Myths and 1 Fact about Mormonism.”
