Regarding the Nov. 28 news article “In Kansas, a shift in oversight for disabled”:
The language in the article and accompanying photo caption were not in agreement. The phrase “developmentally disabled” was used appropriately several times throughout the article. It should have been in the caption, too, instead of the outdated “mentally retarded.”
That phrase is no longer used by those who are aware of and sensitive to the issues of people with developmental disabilities. We refer to it as the “R word.” We won’t even say it; it’s that hurtful. One would think that editors at The Post would know that.
