Another angle on voter suppression

In his July 25 op-ed column, “The illegitimate aims of voter suppression,” Harold Meyerson repeated a Democratic Party assertion that voter identification laws are intended to suppress turnout. On the same day, an article in the Metro section reported that the Maryland Democratic Party is suing the State Board of Elections to prevent Marylanders from voting on a referendum challenging the state’s new congressional map.

A cynic might note that the map in question has been gerrymandered to produce another Democratic seat in Congress. Thus the party’s lawsuit is to suppress voters’ opportunity to vote against the Maryland Democratic Party’s suppression of the effectiveness, if not the fact, of their votes.
