Thank you to Melinda Henneberger for detailing in her Dec. 5 She the People column, “Why I won’t be rooting for Notre Dame,” the tragic yet familiar story of Lizzy Seeberg, the courageous young woman who dared to accuse a Notre Dame football player of sexual assault — before she committed suicide.
The further tragedy is that, even after Penn State, we are no longer surprised to see functionaries circling the wagons, downplaying threats to the accuser and spreading tales of the victim’s complicity. What will it take for our first reaction to be believing and protecting the accuser, rather than a sports program that still brings in big dollars to a university? Ms. Seeberg could have been your daughter.
