We parents have surely heard it all now: Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) says we should consider arming our children’s educators so that they can combat attacks by unhinged killers equipped with high-capacity, military-style assault rifles [“McDonnell, O’Malley at odds on gun issue,” front page, Dec. 19].

Desperate and terrified teachers involved in pitched gun battles in our school hallways, classrooms and gymnasiums? Is this really Mr. McDonnell’s serious answer to an epidemic of mass murder, facilitated by easy access to such weapons?

It is the fecklessness of politicians such as Mr. McDonnell on this issue that requires parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to start shouting “Enough!” long and loudly enough so that these craven politicians hear us. This is surely the moment for a parent-led mass action on assault weapons.
