Many people on the East Coast were unable to go to work Monday or Tuesday because of Hurricane Sandy, an unusual storm fueled by the unusually warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Climate change very probably contributed to or caused this warmth.
So why do the presidential campaigns continue to ignore the issue of climate change? The biggest topic is the economy, but climate change is definitely a drag on the economy and will continue to be for generations. It seems that it has recently contributed to drought in the Midwest and fires in the West.
If we can win World War II and create the Marshall Plan, we can find effective ways to come together to preserve and protect our planet and all the things that live on it, including ourselves.
When people cannot go to work, when they lose their homes, crops and livestock and — eventually — their dreams, it gets to be about the economy, stupid.
