Congress’s power of the purse

In his July 10 op-ed column, “The denier in chief,” Michael Gerson claimed that President Obama’s economic strategy consists of nothing more than “blame shifting and the systematic lowering of expectations.” He then inexplicably rejected a stimulus to the economy as having poor prospects, “given the federal budget crisis.”

The president has repeatedly pushed for greater stimulus and infrastructure spending, which would bolster employment, but he has been obstructed by Republicans in Congress, who somehow manage to ignore this “federal budget crisis” when it comes to tax cuts for the wealthy. Perhaps Mr. Gerson needs to review the basics of American government, such as the fact that the power to spend is held by Congress, not the White House.
