Consider those who are blind to colors

I’ve complained until I’m blue in the face about discrimination shown every day to approximately 10 percent of U.S. males: those afflicted with colorblindness.

The latest example was the Jan. 18 Post-ABC News poll chart reporting on President Obama’s performance. I stared for five minutes at the colored circle/dot that represented the “Economy has begun to recover” respondents and the “Has not” colored circle/dot, and I could see no difference in the tint. When I showed it to my wife (color blindness is considered rare among females), she laughed at my pathetic vision.

Why can’t designers segment categories by shapes or repetitive symbols (stars, pound signs, asterisks, etc)? Other examples that baffle colorblind people: weather maps, airport parking lot signage, Metro train directionals and more. And don’t even get me started on the whole red state vs. blue state thing.
