As a native Mississippian, I’ll be the first to recognize that my home is a complicated place, to say the least. But I take great exception to Dana Milbank’s Nov. 14 column, “The Confederacy of Takers.”

I recognize that Milbank wrote it as a piece of quasi-satire in an attempt to highlight the foolishness of those individuals claiming the right to secede as President Obama begins another term. I won’t disagree on that point. However, in clumping the “taker” states into a whole lump of worthlessness, he becomes no better than those demagogues who play upon prejudices toward poverty and race.
