Regarding Jon Husted’s Feb. 7 Washington Forum commentary, “Redrawing districts the simple way”:
I am a longtime resident of Silver Spring, and after Maryland’s last redistricting I found myself in the 3rd Congressional District, recently calculated as the third-least-compact district in the country. As much as I appreciate the work being done by Rep. John Sarbanes (D), my district, which also contains parts of Annapolis and Baltimore City, is a farce.
The first steps in restoring faith in our political system are to stop the odious practice of gerrymandering and create districts that are based around existing communities. I would strongly encourage Maryland to consider reforms similar to those Mr. Husted proposed.
