Get Occupy out of McPherson

Finally, D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) and now The Post [“Taking on tent city,” editorial, Jan. 15] have acknowledged what was inevitable almost from the beginning: Rats have come to infest the Occupy D.C. encampment at McPherson Square. Had the feckless mayor written briskly to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the Park Police about the slovenly conditions created by the occupiers, a “path forward” out of the District could have been taken much sooner.

Right about now, Newt Gingrich’s advice to the inchoate occupiers to go home, take a bath and go find a job is looking pretty mature and wise. In contrast, The Post’s assertion that Park Service officials shouldn’t be faulted for “going the extra mile in respecting the First Amendment rights” of the protesters is preposterous. The Park Service has indulged these scamps long enough. It is time for them to go.

First, though, the occupiers should clean up their filthy mess and be assessed fees and charges for their almost four months of encampment. McPherson Square has been used as a hotel; occupiers should pay for their lodgings and for the maintenance of their quarters there, too.
