Having read the July 4 front-page article about President Obama facing an “enthusiasm gap” among members of the National Education Association, I propose that Congress pass the No American Left Behind Act. This act would affect more people and cover the same kind of goals as No Child Left Behind. Yearly benchmarks would cover health-care access, the unemployment rate, equal educational opportunities for all students, adequate housing and a thorough revamping of this country’s infrastructure. Under the act, each year the benchmarks were not reached, congressional salaries would be decreased. And if the 100 percent goal was not met within the allotted time, all members of Congress would lose their jobs.
