Keeping our power grid up and running

While I agree that the nation’s power grid might need to be overhauled [“Decrepit U. S. power grid starts to sputter,” front page, Aug. 2], I think our demand for electricity also needs to be reexamined. We have so much light pollution in the Washington region that no one can see the stars well.

Governments and private companies leave lights on all night for “security.” Why not use motion detectors to control many of these lights? If anyone breaches the “security” by moving into a building or parking lot at night, the lights would go on and alert cruising police officers. There is a finite amount of electricity that can be generated, and we should be addressing demand as well as the capacity of our grid.
