First, thank you for telling the story of Dave Madaras and his son Mike [“Lessons passed on,” Sports, Oct. 26]. However, as Marines, we tend to be perfectionists and purists. There is no such thing as an “ex-Marine.” Also, Madaras was part of the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit (MAU) during the 1983 terrorist attack in Beirut. It later was re-designated as the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), as it’s known today. And Madaras was the biggest Marine in the unit, not its biggest soldier (soldiers are in the Army). Finally, on three occasions in the article his name was rendered “Madras.”
