Maryland has the support for offshore wind power

Regarding the Jan. 23 Metro article “O’Malley to submit new wind proposal”:

I take exception to referring to the development of offshore wind power as a 2011 “policy failure.”This push for renewable energy in Maryland isn’t simply a case of environmental organizations championing a greener future. There is a large and diverse mix of supporters, including business leaders, faith leaders, manufacturers and labor unions, fighting for the development of offshore wind energy.

The fact that a wind bill is back again in 2012 is a testament to this strong political and grass-roots support for the industry in Maryland, despite expected opposition from big-money “lobbyists for energy firms.”

It’s true that adding $2 each month to residential utility bills for wind energy is a deterrent, but as we’ve seen, there are no guarantees that fossil fuel costs will stabilize and remain that way. Plus, polling has shown that nearly two-thirds of Maryland voters not only want to see offshore wind power developed but would be willing to pay the $2 more per month to support it.

Why? Because they know that developing clean, offshore wind farms would create jobs and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
