Vincent DeMarco’s April 22 letter extolled William Donald Schaefer’s efforts as an effective gun control advocate while governor of Maryland. Mr. Schaefer may have been an advocate, but to say he was “one of our nation’s leaders in reducing gun violence” is belied by FBI statistics. Mr. Schaefer was governor of Maryland from January 1987 to January 1995, during which time, according to those FBI statistics, gun violence in Maryland increased by over 40 percent.
Whatever he did as governor, he sure did not “reduce gun violence” in Maryland or the nation.
