I read with interest the Oct. 15 Sports article “A show of spirit,” about the Suitland High School football team participating in prayer. I clearly recall that when I played football for Calvin Coolidge High School in the late 1940s, we always gathered together with Coach Gil Conn for a moment before the kickoff to recite the Lord’s Prayer. To me, it was not so much to exhibit a particular faith but rather to allow a moment for our nerves to settle down. I’m not sure that really had an effect; that nervous sense disappeared once the physical contact commenced, like “Bam!” I doubt the Suitland High School players’ participation in the Lord’s Prayer is any different from what I experienced in my high school playing days.
