Running out on peace in Iraq

Regarding the Dec. 21 editorial “A return to old enmities”:

As a veteran of the Iraq campaign during the tough, surge years of 2007 and 2008, I am disheartened by the Obama administration’s hardly concealed rush to wash its hands of any serious strategic commitment to Iraq. The United States paid a huge price to defeat the insurgents (I lost comrades in my command), but the greater struggle is not over. We have to stay committed to ensuring the peace and some semblance of stability.

After Germany fell in 1945, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower told his staff that winning the postwar struggle was every bit as important as the fight itself, or else the sacrifices would be in vain. It’s the same with Iraq. We Iraq veterans, as well as the citizens of the United States and Iraq, earned an enduring resolution to the conflict, not a race to the back door.
