Leonard Steinhorn’s claim in his May 28 letter that Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl is trying to “tell the government what it must do” left out one major component: The Catholic Church, like other religious entities, attempts to convince people of the validity of its teachings. The government’s efforts to force the church to undermine its own teachings carry the force of law. What the church is saying that the government “must do” is simple: Hands off the Establishment Clause.
