Shockingly, I find myself in agreement with Richard Cohen and his Jan. 31 PostPartisan blog excerpt [“Eric Holder’s political cowardice,” op-ed] on Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.’s decision to seek the death penalty for accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
The fact of the matter is that dying is easy. To send Mr. Tsarnaev straight to hell, lock him up for the rest of his life in prison. He would come to realize just how long a lifetime can be when it has no meaning, no joy, no hope of accomplishment. He would eventually be forgotten, and the infirmity of old age would take him. This is far preferable to the few minutes or seconds it takes to die.
