In her Aug. 11 On Faith column, “Kosher atheism: Why ditch God but keep the rules?” Lisa Miller noted the thoughts and actions of characters from the Hebrew bible as support for this great contradiction. She referred specifically to Job as the “Bible’s greatest doubter” and to Jacob’s combating one of God’s angels.
To point to these biblical references in support of the notion of disbelieving in the existence of God yet “religiously” following his laws is of itself a great contradiction. There is a universe of difference between atheism and arguing with God or questioning His motivations.
