The NRA goal: To sell more weapons

Regarding Dana Milbank’s Jan. 31 Washington Sketch column, “NRA’s LaPierre can’t shove aside reality”:

Most of us saw an unspeakable tragedy on Dec. 14 in Newtown, Conn. National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre apparently saw an opportunity.

Arming teachers and staff in all schools would mean even more guns sold. The slaughter of 20 first-graders, the impassioned testimony of a former congresswoman debilitated by a shot to the head, the logic of background checks and limits on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines — none of that swayed Mr. LaPierre.

This is not surprising. The purpose of NRA lobbying is to help the firearms industry sell more weapons and ammunition. Individual NRA members can be used to yell “self-defense” or “Second Amendment” as a smoke screen.

Sadly, until we have strict, enforceable federal laws, the fear and carnage will continue.
