Time’s up for presidential debates

It is time to consider dropping presidential debates. On Wednesday night, we viewed a performance by two rational, unemotional candidates so tightly scripted that no genuine human emotions were allowed to penetrate the fog of talking points endlessly parroted.

It was a dumb show not worth the price of 90 minutes of viewers’ time. Further, moderator Jim Lehrer lost control of the debate in the first few minutes because he was unwilling or unable to insist that the candidates shut up when their time was up.

Mitt Romney “won” the debate by playing the bully and because President Obama failed time and time again to remind voters of the former governor’s business record, his undisclosed tax returns and the 47 percent of American people that he has written off as moochers unworthy of his consideration.
