Traffic jams justify higher taxes

It is not surprising that the majority of Marylanders surveyed by The Post oppose additional gasoline sales taxes to fund road improvements [“Md. governor’s agenda faces major hurdles, poll shows,” front page, Jan. 29]. Who wants to pay more taxes? But I am always surprised that knee-jerk reactions don’t give way to more rational thinking. As Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) made clear, citizens should weigh tax increases with other quality-of-life issues, like spending stressful hours in traffic, burning gas, wasting time, etc. I would prefer to pay a little more in taxes to improve the traffic congestion here, among the worst in the nation.

I salute the governor for the courage and wisdom he is showing. This is something that is sorely lacking in my own governor, Virginia’s Robert F. McDonnell (R). It is called leadership.
