Kudos to Courtland Milloy for urging Dan Snyder to change the name of his Washington Redskins [Metro, Jan. 9]. The name is deeply offensive, and not just to Native Americans. Those of us who want to root for the local team should not have to feel guilty about cheering for a team with a racist name.

Let’s also recognize that our community is the nation’s capital. While the decision ultimately belongs to Mr. Snyder, President Obama, all members of Congress and D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray should join together and urge the owner to make the change. It would make the team easier to embrace.
