Why Social Security is in Treasury bonds
The chutzpah of Richard W. Souther’s Dec. 22 letter is stunning. He left out the reason the $3 trillion Social Security trust fund is in U.S. Treasury bonds: The Treasury borrowed the money from Social Security in the first place. (That’s what bonds are: loans.) Am I to be held responsible for a little bit of the federal deficit every time I redeem one of my U.S. Savings Bonds?
