Yoga for the love of it

I had to chuckle at the idea that teaching yoga is an escape from stress [“Reaching in a new direction,” Metro, Jan. 31]. There is a lot more to being a yoga teacher (if you want to be competent, let alone good) than walking in and telling folks to stretch their arms and legs. Hours of practice, ongoing study, networking, interacting with students outside class by e-mail and in person, record keeping, bookkeeping and other business stuff. No doubt the environment is a lot more supportive than most corporate environments and the people you meet and work with are generally sweeter, but unless you’re doing just an occasional class in your living room, you’re going to have many of the stresses everyone else has.

Much more substantial reasons for wanting to be a yoga teacher than looking for an imaginary stress-free job are that you love your practice, it has changed your life for the better and you want to share this revelation to, as studio owner Katja Brandis said, “change the world person by person.”
