One must tread gingerly when experimenting with cocktails. But sometimes a tricky ingredient, such as ginger liqueur, will lead you in strange and delicious directions -- as is the case with this complex drink.
About the other ingredients: Genever is a rich, malty, almost whiskeylike style of gin from the Netherlands. For the apple brandy, a domestic brand such as Laird's works well. Maraschino liqueur, as always, is not the juice of maraschino cherries.
- 3/4 ounce ginger liqueur, such as the King's Ginger or Domaine de Canton
- 3/4 ounce genever
- 3/4 ounce apple brandy
- 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1/4 ounce maraschino liqueur
- Quarter-size slice of peeled ginger root
Fill a mixing glass halfway with ice. Add the ginger liqueur, genever, apple brandy, lemon juice and maraschino liqueur. Stir vigorously, then strain into a chilled cocktail (martini) glass.
Rub the ginger around the edge of the glass, then use it to garnish the drink.
