Chocolate salami is a traditional Tuscan dessert that is easy, requires no baking and looks pretty when it's sliced and arranged on a plate.
The original recipe contained raw eggs, which have been omitted here.
Servings: 12 - 16
- 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 14 ounces (1 can) nonfat sweetened condensed milk
- 3 cups coarsely crushed dry cookies, such as tea biscuits, vanilla wafers or animal crackers (they should be about the size of your fingernail, minus the nail extensions)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
Combine the chocolate chips and condensed milk in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on MEDIUM (50 percent power), stirring at 1-minute intervals, until the chocolate is melted.
Stir in the cookies and vanilla extract. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes, until the mixture is firm enough to shape.
Place a 20-inch-long piece of wax paper on a work surface. Sift the confectioners' sugar over the wax paper. Transfer the chocolate mixture to the wax paper and shape the mixture into a thick 12-inch-long log.
Position the log about 1 inch from the edge of the wax paper that is closest to you. Roll the log in the paper, then twist the ends of the paper to close them tight.
Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, until firm enough to slice.
Let stand for about 30 minutes at room temperature before unwrapping, cutting on the diagonal into 12 or 16 slices, and serving.
