It's becoming more common to find an Italian amaro, such as Averna, in a cocktail. An amaro is usually consumed solo after dinner as a digestive. This is different: a unique concoction that balances the richness of cognac with Averna's herbal and bittersweet chocolate flavors plus the fruity aroma and almond notes of maraschino liqueur.
We found Averna at Calvert Woodley Liquors in Northwest (202-966-4400), Schneider's of Capitol Hill (202-543-9300) and Central Liquors downtown (202-737-2800).
- 1 1/2 ounces cognac
- 1 ounce Averna
- 1/2 ounce maraschino liqueur
- Orange peel twist, for garnish
Fill a mixing glass two-thirds full with ice. Add the cognac, Averna and maraschino liqueur. Stir vigorously for 30 seconds, then strain into a cocktail (martini) glass. Garnish with the orange peel twist.
