This Manhattan variation calls for white, or unaged, whiskey (also known as "white dog"), of which there are more and more brands on the market. Death's Door brand is available at Ace Beverage in Northwest (202-966-4444).

Be sure to use bianco or blanc vermouth, such as Dolin Blanc; its aromatics and flavor are very different from those of dry vermouth.

Servings: 1
  • Ice
  • 1 1/2 ounces white whiskey
  • 1/2 ounce Benedictine
  • 1/2 ounce bianco or blanc vermouth
  • 3 dashes orange bitters


Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the whiskey, Benedictine, bianco or blanc vermouth and the bitters. Stir vigorously, then strain into a chilled cocktail (martini) glass.
