Top GOP officials
urge Radel to resign

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) joined top state Republican officials Tuesday in urging Rep. Trey Radel (R-Fla.), who recently pleaded guilty to cocaine possession, to resign. But the congressman’s aides said he is focusing on rehab and will return to work.

On Monday, Florida Republican Party Chairman Lenny Curry joined a growing number of party leaders in Radel’s own district in suggesting that Radel should resign after his recent conviction in Washington.

Scott, speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, said he agreed with the GOP leaders. “Look, Trey is going through a tough time. My prayers and my wife’s prayers are with his family. But we have to hold all of our elected officials to the highest standards,” the governor said.

Judge orders release of Sandy Hook tapes

A Connecticut judge on Tuesday ordered the release of the 911 recordings from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, but the tapes will not be immediately unsealed.

The state’s Freedom of Information Commission ruled in September that the recordings should be provided to the Associated Press, but State’s Attorney Stephen Sedensky III asked for a stay while he appeals that order.

Sedensky has argued the release of the tapes could cause anguish for victims’ families. New Britain Superior Court Judge Eliot Prescott denied his request Tuesday, but the tapes remain sealed until Dec. 4 to give the prosecutor a chance to appeal. The Dec. 14, 2012, massacre left 20 first-graders and six educators dead.

Zimmerman had five guns when arrested: George Zimmerman had five guns and more than 100 rounds of ammunition with him when deputies arrested him earlier this month on domestic violence charges, according to court documents released Tuesday. A search warrant made public by the Seminole County court clerk shows that Zimmerman had a 12-gauge shotgun, an AR-15 assault rifle and three handguns when he was arrested Nov. 18 at his girlfriend’s house. Samantha Scheibe said Zimmerman pointed a gun at her during an argument. Zimmerman, 30, is free on $9,000 bail.
