(Mississippi Senate)
Intent on regaining Mississippi's red-leaning 1st district ever since Rep. Travis Childers (D) scored an upset victory in a 2008 special election, Republicans celebrated Nunnelee's win against the incumbent in the 2010 midterms.
Elected to the state Senate in 1994, Nunnelee became a central actor in any discussion of Mississippi's finances when he was chosen to be chairman of the powerful state Senate Appropriations Committee in 2008. He has been an ally of Gov. Haley Barbour (R) in disputes over how to balance the budget, for instance opposing the use of federal stimulus dollars to fund Mississippi schools.
Born in Tupelo, Miss., Nunnelee was a student at Mississippi State University when an eye disease made him lose his eyesight. He continued his studies, earning a bachelor's degree in 1980. In the early 1980s, two cornea transplants restored his sight.
State Senate
In the winter of 1994, Nunnelee jumped into a special election to replace state Sen. Roger Wicker, who had resigned from his seat after being elected to Mississippi's 1st House district. After coming in first in an eight-candidate field, Nunnelee won a late December runoff against Claude Hartley, who would later become the state's Board of Education chairman.
Nunnelee wants to reduce the size of the federal government, which he argues has grown so large as to threaten liberties. "I like to use the Yellow Pages Test - If you can find a service in the yellow pages, then government should not be providing that service," he says.
He also argued for cutting the income tax and the estate tax, and he touted his work to lower the state income tax for married couples.
Nunnelee has been a legislative allyof former Republican National Committee Chairman Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour (R) and Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant. He has been mentioned as a potential candidate for lieutenant governor in 2011, when Bryant is expected to run for governor.
