Giannoulias, a former professional basketball player, had some high-profile teammates while practicing on the courts of Chicago. The list of people he's played with reads like the White House's employee roster, and includes President Barack Obama.
Maybe because of the political ambitions of the players in the game, Giannoulias surprised his mentor, Obama, in 2006 with his decision to run for statewide office at the age of only 30. The Illinois treasurer had a larger ambition in 2010: Win the Senate seat the president gave up in order to move to the White House. He fell short to GOP nominee Mark Kirk in November 2010.

Giannoulias's rise to Senate candidate started when his father, Alexis, emigrated from Greece. Coming to Chicago, Alexis worked as a pickle salesman before starting his own real-estate company and Broadway Bank.
Born in 1976, Giannoulias showed an ambition and love for basketball. He attended Chicago University for a year, before transferring to Boston University, where he played basketball and studied economics.
In July 2009, Giannoulias announced his Senate bid after Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D) declined to bid for the post. The Obama team would've backed Madigan, but did not choose sides in the primary.
Giannoulias said he was talking to Obama adviser David Axelrod who said "Listen, she's [Madigan] been doing this for a long time, she's got great name recognition, great polling numbers. We want to keep this seat."
While living in Chicago, Giannoulias played basketball with many of the same people as President Barack Obama. During these games, he grew close to Obama and considers him a mentor.
Other players in the game included Obama's brother-in-law Craig Robinson, Obama Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and long-time Obama fundraiser John W. Rogers Jr.
