Path to Power

The only physician in the Maryland Senate, Harris has served as a Maryland Assemblyman for 10 years, representing the 7th legislative district.

The son of Ukrainian and Hungarian immigrants who fled from a communist regime, Harris grew up in Queens, N.Y., and graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1977 with a degree in human biology. He received his medical degree in 1980 from Johns Hopkins and served as lieutenant commander of the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps during Operation Desert Storm.

The Issues

Health Care

Harris supports health-care reform without a government takeover. He is a member of the state Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee, and the Joint Committee on Health Care Delivery and Financing.

He disagrees with what he calls "overreaching" measures in the 2009 reform bills and supports creating a health-care "exchange," where everyone can choose health insurance from a broad range of options, and have employers help pay for it.

The Network

Harris's alliances were drawn in his 2008 run for a House seat. He secured the backing of former Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich Jr. during the Republican primary.

Harris counts fellow Maryland Sen. Nancy C. Jacobs and House Delegate Anthony J. O'Donnell as trusted and respected colleagues.
