Annie Tomasini
Director of Intergovernmental Relations, Harvard University (since December 2010)
Tomasini first made news as a star basketball player in high school and college. She served as deputy press secretary to Vice President Joseph R. Biden until December 2010, when she left to become director of intergovernmental relations at Harvard University.
Tomasini grew up in Boston and developed media strategies as a consultant there and in Washington, D.C., before joining Biden 's presidential campaign in 2007. She worked as Biden 's Iowa press aide and was later elevated to a national position on his short-lived presidential bid, travelling with him.
Tomasini is a Boston, Mass., native. She made a name for herself early on as a star basketball player at Boston Latin, one of the best secondary schools in the city.
She started playing on the varsity basketball team in seventh grade, and was a three-time Dual County League MVP and finished her career with 1,890 points. She was also a member of the swim team.
At the vice president's office, Tomasini worked with a small group of press aides to craft Biden 's message to the public. She also handled public relations crises and work with reporters.
At Harvard, Tomasini will be in charge of outreach to the Massachusetts legislature and the governor's office on issues related to higher education.
Tomasini has worked closely with Elizabeth Alexander from her earliest days on Biden 's campaign staff. In the Obama administration, she served as Alexander 's deputy press secretary. She also worked closely with Director of Communications Jay Carney to develop the overall message for the vice president.
Tomasini was part of the core group of Biden campaign staffers who were brought to the Obama campaign after Biden was selected as the Obama's running-mate. Others include foreign policy adviser Antony Blinken , Senate chief of staff Terrell McSweeny and scheduler Nancy Orloff.
