The former dean of Tennessee's congressional delegation, the successor to ex-Rep. and veep Al Gore and onetime chairman of the House Science and Technology panel, Gordon tried to cultivated a reputation a fair-minded congressman willing to seek compromise. But presenting a perfect pick-off chance for Republicans, Gordon announced in December 2009 that he would retire after the 2010 elections.
The GOP made good and elected Diane Black (R) to Gordon's seat.
