Path to Power

Born in Barberton, Ohio, Sutton received a law degree in 1990 from the University of Akron. Elected to the Barberton City Council while she was still in law school, Sutton quickly climbed the political ladder. In 1991, she took a seat on the Summit County Council. The following year, she was elected to the state House, where she served on the Commerce and Labor Committee. Term limited out of her office in 2000, Sutton went on to work as a labor lawyer.

In 2006, then-Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) announced he would run for Senate rather than seek re-election to Ohio's 13th district, a traditionally Democratic seat made up of western Akron and suburban Cleveland. An open U.S. House seat was a golden opportunity for Sutton to jump back in politics.

The Issues

In the House, Sutton has focused on domestic policy - especially labor issues, energy reform and trade agreements. She also identifies ethics reform as a priority.

While a state legislator, Sutton worked to strengthen laws on domestic violence. She wrote a bill that required an immediate arrest if there was evidence of domestic violence; other lawmakers favored encouraging an arrest rather than mandating it. Sutton testified about her abusive first marriage, drawing on her personal experience to make her case.

The Network

During her first House term, Sutton twice got her fellow freshmen Democrats to collectively engage with their party's leadership. In 2007, she secured nearly all of the frosh's signatures on a letter urging Rep. Charles Rangel to grant them a trade hearing to talk; in 2008, she organized a conference call between then-Sen. Barack Obama and freshmen representatives who had voted against the bailout plan's first version.

Sutton's efforts to pressure Democrats into opposing free-trade agreements have been compared to those of Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who Sutton succeeded in the House in 2006.
