Bill Flores (R-Tex.)

U.S. Representative (since January 2011)

(Facebook)

Why He Matters

Path To Power

Flores was the oldest child in a military family. Born on an Air Force base in Wyoming, Flores called the Texas Panhandle town of Stratford his home base. When his father retired there, Flores helped him work cattle and build his own herd.

Flores attended Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the corps of cadets. He earned a BBA in accounting.

Flores wanted to be the Republican to unseat nine-term Democrat Chet Edwards (Texas) in a mostly Republican district. It's a race that creates unusual situations. Like when Republican Flores criticized the NRA, prompting Democrat Edwards to call him "out of touch."

Flores is banking on his status as a political outsider to help him win in 2010. He was named on of the GOP's "Young Guns," which entitled him to extra funding from the national party.

Flores is an alumnus of Texas A&M University, which is hugely important in Texas's 17th district. His 2010 opponent, Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Texas), went there too.
