Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.)

U.S. Representative (since January 2011)

Why He Matters

In one of the biggest upsets of the 2010 election, Farenthold, a lawyer and conservative talk-radio host, defeated Rep. Solomon Ortiz (D) by less than 800 votes in Texas' 27th district. Ortiz, who had held the seat since it was first created in 1982, waited three weeks before conceding.

Farenthold, who was not considered a threat to oust Ortiz until the campaign's final weeks, ran as a tea-party favorite. He cited the incumbent's vote for the Obama administration's health-care reform bill as his impetus for entering the race and emphasized shrinking government.

In His Own Words

"Early on in the race, I had a nightmare that I won: And now it's like, 'Now what do I do?'"

Path To Power

Born and raised in south Texas, Farenthold is the grandson of Frances "Sissy" Farenthold, a liberal Texas Democrat who served in the state House for several terms and later ran unsuccessfully for governor. In 1972, Sissy Farenthold finished second in balloting at the Democratic National Convention to become presidential nominee George McGovern's running-mate. Farenthold was 11 when his father was killed after agreeing to testify against co-conspirators in a money-laundering scheme.

Farenthold graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in radio, television and film before earning a law degree from St. Mary's University School of Law. He went on to practice law and to found Farenthold Consulting LLC, a computer and web-design consulting firm.

The Issues

Farenthold opposes government intervention in the economy and argues that "excessive regulations" and "punitive taxes" are an obstacle to economic growth."Government must get out of the way and let the free market system work," Farenthold wrote on his 2010 web site.

As such, Farenthold believes the economy can rebound through deregulatory measures, substantial cuts to the incomeand the capital-gains tax, and slashed spending. For instance, he has favored eliminating international aid.
