Following three years of active duty, he returned to school and graduated in 1997 from Yale in 1997 with a master's in public and private management.
The Family Business
The year after his Yale graduation, Guthrie came home and joined Trace Die Cast, an upstart manufacturing business that his father, Lowell Guthrie, had founded in 1988 with just 15 employees. By 2007, a time span in which Brett Guthrie had gotten promoted to director of operations and then vice president, the company had grown to more than 554 workers.
A solid economic and social conservative, Guthrie champions low taxes and government spending, and is a staunch opponent of abortion rights. He has voted with his Republican colleagues 91.5 percent of the time in the 111th Congress.
The Economy
Guthrie argues that the best hope for stimulating the U.S. economy and ending the 2008-2009 recession lies in cutting taxes and making permanent such Bush-era tax cuts as the repeal of the estate tax.
Retiring Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) endorsed Guthrie's 2008 election campaign less than a week after it first went public. Guthrie warmly accepted the support.
When fellow Republican Trey Grayson - currently the Kentucky secretary of state - runs in 2010 for the Senate, he will do so with the help of a mutual friend, Nate Hodson. Hodson, who will be Grayson's campaign manager, was Guthrie's communications director from January to August 2009.
