Path to Power

Kennedy went to college at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. He received the outstanding student in political science award and graduated in 1982. From there, he headed for law school at the University of Virginia. He earned his J.D. in 1985.

Kennedy soon began the Capitol Hill climb. From 1987 to 1989, he took a job as general counsel for a newly-elected Democratic senator from Nevada named Harry Reid. In 2007, Reid became Senate majority leader.

The Issues

Kennedy's experience both in Congress and in the Labor Department make him an ideal go-between. Kennedy now works with many of the same people and on the same labor-related issues, just from a slightly different perspective.

After Kennedy's nomination was announced, his former boss, Rep. Miller, said in a statement, "I look forward to continue working with him and the Obama Labor Department to rebuild the middle class by expanding access to affordable health care, ensuring fair and equal pay, improving worker safety, and strengthening retirement security."

The Network

Kennedy has worked for some major players on Capitol Hill. He started his political career as general counsel to Sen. Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.). Then a freshman, Reid is now Senate majority leader.

A Clinton-appointee to the National Economic Council, Kennedy worked under then-NEC director Gene B. Sperling, who is now advising Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.
