Overview

The Bureau of Consular Affairs has two main responsibilities - strengthening U.S. border security and providing passports and visas to U.S. citizens. It is also responsible for protecting Americans abroad, and will work with foreign governments if a citizen is injured, arrested or a victim of a crime abroad.

There are 11,000 members of the bureau spread across more than 300 locations.
