Captive soldier seen in new video

U.S. officials have received a new video of captured U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl that they believe was taken within the last month, showing that the soldier is alive.

The video came to light several days ago, said one senior defense official. Another official said that Bergdahl appeared in poorer health than in previous videos, showing the signs of his nearly five years in captivity. The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Bergdahl, who is from Idaho, was taken prisoner in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. It is believed he is being held somewhere in Pakistan.

The Taliban have said they would free him in exchange for several of their most senior operatives who are being detained at the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Bergdahl’s family said that they learned Wednesday about the video. “Naturally, this is very important to us and our resolve to continue our efforts to bring Bowe home as soon as possible,” a statement said.

NEW YORK
RNC protesters to receive $18 million settlement

New York City has agreed to pay $18 million to settle dozens of lawsuits filed by protesters, journalists and bystanders who said they were wrongly arrested at the 2004 Republican National Convention and held for hours in makeshift holding cells, lawyers said Wednesday.

The settlement, which must be approved by a federal judge, would end nearly a decade of legal wrangling over more than 1,800 arrests, mostly on charges of disorderly conduct or parading without a permit. Hundreds sued, saying they were illegally arrested by an overzealous police department. Nearly all the arrests were dismissed by the court, or the defendants were acquitted.

ILLINOIS
Chicago Archdiocese to release abuse files

The Archdiocese of Chicago said Wednesday it will release 6,000 pages of documents detailing what it knows about decades of clergy sex abuse allegations and how it handled them, calling it an effort to “bring healing to the victims and their families.”

Victims’ attorneys, who have fought for years to hold the Catholic Church accountable for concealing crimes and sometimes reassigning priests to positions where they continued to molest children, said they expected to receive the documents Wednesday afternoon and make them public next week.

The nation’s third-largest archdiocese agreed to release complaints, personnel documents and other files for about 30 priests with substantiated abuse allegations as part of settlements with victims.

HEALTH
Research dispels diabetes‘obesity paradox’

The “obesity paradox” — the controversial notion that being overweight might actually be healthier for some people with diabetes — seems to be a myth, researchers report. A major study finds there’s no survival advantage to being large, and a disadvantage to being very large.

More than 24 million Americans have diabetes, mostly Type 2, the kind that is on the rise because of obesity. About two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight, including one-third who are obese.

Weighing too much increases the chances of heart disease, cancer and premature death. But some small studies have suggested this might not be true for everyone, and that Type 2 diabetics might even benefit from a few extra pounds — a “metabolic reserve” to help get them through sickness.

The new research — which looked at deaths according to how much people weighed when diabetes was diagnosed — dispels that idea.

The National Institutes of Health and the American Diabetes Association paid for the work. Results are published in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine.

Navy fighter jet crashes off Virginia: A Navy fighter jet crashed Wednesday in Atlantic waters off Virginia’s coast, and the pilot has been rescued, a Navy official said. The crash comes a week after a Navy helicopter plunged into the ocean in the region, leaving three dead. A spokesman for Naval Air Forces Atlantic said the F/A-18E Super Hornet crashed at 2:35 p.m. some 45 miles off Virginia Beach during a routine training mission. The pilot’s name has not been released. On Jan. 8, a Navy MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter crashed about 18 miles off Virginia Beach in the Atlantic with five crew members aboard. Three died as a result of that crash, while two others were treated at a hospital and released.
