The Buffalo, N.Y., businessman decided 2010 was his year to run for governor of New York, and tried to succeed the retiring and scandal-plagued David Paterson (D). He shocked political insiders when he soundly beat establishment Republican Rick Lazio in the September primary, but ultimately lost to Andrew Cuomo in the general election.
Paladino said he'd create jobs and lower taxes by ten percent. His low-tax mantra won him the support of the local tea party, the grassroots conservative movement that carried a wave of anti-incumbent sentiment through the country in 2010.
